Why Does No One Visit My Website?

You've got a website, and possibly paid a lot for it, and expected the world to beat a path to your door ... so why does it seem like no one is showing up to the party?

    SEO Matters

Search Engines are the most common way for people to find your website, so if your site isn't specifically optimised to place your site high on the list for your keywords, you might be missing out on this meaningful opportunity. Little things like not having enough text on your front page, not taking advantage of meta tags (hidden notes on your pages that give instructions to search engines), and not focusing on the right key phrases can all have a huge impact.

    Simplify Navigation

On a small site, navigation (how you get from one page to the next)is straightforward. You'll probably have a home page, a contact page, products page, etc. But what if you have hundreds of pages? Also your super-exciting flash navigation might look fabulous, but search engines like plain text. A site designer must balance asthetic appeal and practicality. Also if your site navigation is confusing and pages are difficult to find, users will get fed up quickly and won't come back.

Submit your web address to Online Directories and Trade Associations

Check around and see if there are business directories for your local area that will give you a link (most of them are free). Having quality incoming links (ones on sites whose topic relates to yours are considered higher "quality" by Search Engines) will improve your page rank, which will improve others willingness to link to you and will also help move you up the search engine listings. There are also topic-driven directories and trade associations that will list certain types of sites.

    Tell people about your website

Don't forget to tell the people you already know about your website! Have the address printed on your business cards, signs, brochures, letterheads, compliment slips, envelopes, invoices, receipts, catalogues, press releases and packaging, stickers and uniforms. If it leaves your offices, it should have your webs address on it!

    Keep Your Content Fresh

A static website is one that people are unlikely to return to. Keep it fresh by adding a blog for updates and news, write articles about relevant topics (which is also a great way to show off your expertise), and post promotions or seasonal events.

    Promote it online

There are good advertising methods which you can pay for, such as Google Adsense, but there are also other free techniques you can use as well. If you visit forums, put your web address in your signature. Answer questions on Yahoo Answers that are relevant to your field, and point them to the answer... on YOUR website! Although you can't just go and graffiti your web address out on the web (that would be considered spamming), you can find many relevant places where you can slip it into the conversation.

Remember, there are people out there who WANT the information you're providing! Your job is to get the address in their hands!
